12/2 Baker signs 1-year deal

The Cubs and Jeff Baker avoided arbitration, and the infielder signed a one-year, $1.175 million deal on Thursday. Baker was one of six Cubs who are arbitration eligible. The team will tender contracts to the other five: Geovany Soto, Tom Gorzelanny, Koyie Hill, Sean Marshall and Carlos Marmol. As of now, Baker is listed on the depth chart at first base.

Boy, that Hendry is one SHREWD GM isn’t he? Snagging Baker for ONLY 1.175 million juuuuuuuuuuuuuust ahead of all the other GMs waiting in line, salivating to get Baker under contract. The Ricketts’ must be SO proud of Hendry!! Now that we have Baker under contract and wasting a roster spot better suited for a rookie AND spending more payroll in the WRONG area (Utility player? C’mon, couldn’t a rookie do what Baker did last year or more for less money?) there’s no stopping the Juggernaut Jim Hendry lead Cubs of 2011!! Now…if he can only manage to sign Nefi Perz AGAIN.

Exactly my point. You may be on to something about Hendry and his trading vs. free agent signing.

Hendry and his free agent signings don’t seem to work out to well. However, his trades have been pretty good in the past. Maybe he should only be allowed to make trades and let someone else, like Greg Maddux, take over the free agent signings.
We would have been better to let Baker walk. Nothing against the guy, but we’ve already got Blake DeWitt and Darwin Barney. Plus, we have some guys like Ryan Flaherty that could do the same job as Baker for around the league minimum.
