1/13 Leadoff by committee

Cubs manager Mike Quade hinted he may rotate players in the No. 1 spot in the order.

“You look at this club, as I do right now, and you say, ‘Who’s a perennial leadoff guy?'” Quade said. “‘Who’s the prototypical leadoff guy? Do we have one?’ And I would say, ‘I don’t think so.’ OK, when the answer is ‘I don’t think so,’ I can mix and match. Maybe somebody asserts himself as that guy, again, keeping an open mind and just making sure you weigh all the variables.”

That’s something that will play out this spring. Among the candidates to watch are Blake DeWitt, Jeff Baker and Kosuke Fukudome.

Kudos to Quade for having the Steve Stones to address the lack of a lead-off man. Another indictment on Hendry for spending 10 mil on Pena when maybe a lead-off man would have been a more pressing need.

I am happy that Mike Quade acknowledges the fact that the Cubs do not have a legitimate lead-off guy, however, inserting just anybody in that spot is not the answer. It requires a special player who can draw walks, hit for average with a high on base percentage, someone with speed who can apply pressure on the opposing pitcher and defense, someone who can make things happen. Not just anybody can fill that role. Jim Hendry needs to take a serious look into trading for such a guy. Otherwise, once again, the Cubs will not have a spark to ignite the offense. With such a move, the Cubs would be back in business. Please, Mr. Hendry, the lead off role is too important to ignore. Mike Quade knows that I am right. The lead off man is the last position that the Cubs need to address to be a factor in 2011.
