2/21 Dempster to start Opening Day

Cubs manager Mike Quade announced Monday that Ryan Dempster will be the Opening Day starter, and will be followed by Carlos Zambrano and Matt Garza. Quade said he slept on the decision Sunday night. Pitching coach Mark Riggins needed to know to get the Cactus League rotation in order. Zambrano had started six straight Opening Days for the Cubs, and is 1-2 in those outings. Quade said he talked to all three in his office Monday and all handled the decision well.

“There’s some instinct here for me,” Quade said. “I do pay attention to numbers but you weigh it out and keep looking and it’s him, him, him, and finally I said, this is the way we’re going.

“I don’t think there was a bad decision here,” he said. “I’m sitting here now so this is what I came up with.”

Good. Dempster deserves Opening Day.

Also, time to update your picture. Get a photo with Quade.

Can managing THIS roster with so little options for opening day starter, lead-off man, right fielder, first base… be that difficult? Quade deserves the benefit of the doubt by all means but I hope he feels free to stop suggesting that he is painstakingly and deliberatley doing his job….between “him”, “him” & “him”…he picks “him”. Duh, no brainer Mike. Were you the last one to figure out that among the Cy Young candidates Hendry blessed you with Dempster was the choice??? How about showing some of that “world beater” instinct you have and name Colvin the starting right fileder and Fukodome the fourth outfielder/defensive replacement for Soriano who, if you are a man of your word will pull for defense in most games?

Dempster is the right choice but one game does not make a season. All of the starters need to pitch well. Having options in the field and at the plate are good. Its a marathon not a sprint and with Quade at the helm he knows that and will do what is to be done in the clubhouse too. One day at a time Cubs Fans!
