2/25 Cubs notebook – UPDATED

Here’s the Cubs lineup for Sunday’s Cactus League opener:

RF Fukudome
SS Castro
CF Byrd
3B Ramirez
1B Pena
LF Soriano
C Soto
2B DeWitt
P Zambrano

Manager Mike Quade says Fukudome appears to be favorite to leadoff, even though last year he hit .193 in 181 at-bats in the No. 1 spot in the lineup. He has a career .233 average as the leadoff man. What Quade is looking at is that Fukudome has a career .335 average in the first month of the season. What was Fukudome’s take on leading off?

“I don’t hate it,” he said, smiling.

Quade didn’t lose any sleep over the winter thinking about lineups.

“I might commit suicide if I find myself in the middle of a bunch of trout or redfish someday and all of a sudden I’m thinking who’s my third hole hitter — there’s plenty of time for that,” Quade said.

* Angel Guzman will face hitters on Wednesday with a live BP session. It will be the first time since the 2009 season. He will throw his fourth side session on Sunday. Guzman is coming back from right shoulder surgery.

* The Cubs moved to HoHoKam Park after Friday’s workout. They will practice there Saturday — no intrasquad game — and then kick off games on Sunday.

* Friday was Billy and Shirley Williams’ 51st wedding anniversary, and their granddaughter Nicollete Simpson’s 21st birthday. She starred at Glenbard South, and now is an outfielder on the University of Illinois softball team.

* Friday also would’ve been Ron Santo’s 71st birthday. RIP.

I have to hand it to Quade, this seems to be the most logical line up he can put out there even though it has the excrutiating lead-off man in Fukodome and just a run-of-the-mill second baseman DeWitt. With any good fortune and SOME NERVE Quade may replace both with spring training stand out rookies by opening day??? This is what we can expect due to lack of options given Quade and some poor decisions by Hendry.

is Colvin game ready yet? If he is then this is kinda a kick in the nuts for him huh? I am growing to hate the Cubs it seems everything they do bothers me… o well at least I will always have the Packers (one of the greatest organizations in pro sports)…

Yes, Colvin is game ready, but Quade needs to find a leadoff man and Fukudome may be best option. Plus, Colvin batted .246 after the All-Star break. He’s got some work to do.

So, if the lead-off candidates are Fuku, DeWitt, and Baker, are Colvin and Barney not even given the chance to win starting jobs?

So… Colvin has some work to do due to his post All-Star break average of .246…before he gets playing time? I don’t get it, based BATTING AVERAGES wouldn’t that mean Pena has a lot more work to do than Colvin? Yet it seems Pena’s playing time is a lock based on Hendry dishing out TEN MILLION FREAKIN’ DOLLARS…right? I wonder if by some act of good will/guilt Fukodome suddenly returned the millions of dollars Hendry foolishly gave him for 4 years and lowered his salary to match Colvin’s…would Colvin THEN still have as much work to do with his .246 average and 20 homeruns from last season to beat out Fukodome for the starting RF job? Just because Fukodme may be the lesser of all of Hendry’s feeble leadoff options does not mean it is still best for the team that Fukodome and his lack of run production trumps Colvin’s. I could understand the gamble on Pena considering despite his batting average decline over the past few years he is still capable of driving in a decent amount of runs and compared to Soriano’s salary 10 is a bargain. But hasn’t Fukodome proven there is little upside to his game and at best is a defensive replacement for SorryOhNo! I dropped the ball?
