3/15 Off day

Mike Quade was looking forward to Wednesday’s off day, the only one this spring. His plans?

“Absolutely nothing, and loving every minute of it,” he said.

Quade isn’t going to go searching for a fishing hole in Arizona.

“The only reason I would go is to say, you can really catch fish in the desert,” he said. “But I’m such a salt water snob.”

He expects to wake up at 5:30 a.m. just as he does every other day in spring.

“But I can get up and lay there and I don’t have to start the wheels cranking until 7:30 if I want,” he said. “It’s ‘What am I going to do,’ as opposed to ‘Here’s what I’ve got to do,’ and just that makes it a great day.”

Hi Carrie,
I’ve been very impressed with Mike Quade. His past roles with the Cubs have been outside of the media spotlight, so I didn’t have much to judge him on before he began interviewing frequently with the media this spring. His Popeye-esque looks put this picture in my head that he was kind of like a quirky baseball lifer like Don Zimmer (nothing against Zimmer, 1989 was AMAZING). I was pleasantly surprised to find out that he just turned 54. He has energy, he’s intelligent, he’s well-spoken and he has a good rapport with the players. I fear that the Cubs don’t have enough to challenge the Reds into September, but I believe we have an outside shot and that Mike Quade is the guy to get us there.

Having never been in an MLB locker room I have little perspective, but I’m always amazed at media accounts of locker rooms and meetings during rough patches of the season. They always make it sound as if it takes something huge to get the manager to hold a meeting or mention something to a player. I get the sense that Quade’s approach will be far different than Lou’s “let ’em do what they’re gonna do and the talent will take care of itself”. Here’s to hope in the midst of a crazy time.
