3/18 Spring surprise

Every Spring Training, there is one player who makes a case for a spot on the Opening Day roster. Darwin Barney is doing just that. The infielder went 3-for-4 on Friday in the Cubs’ 14-13 loss to the Reds and drew two walks. He started at second and played well.

“He’s doing everything he can to get [on the 25-man roster],” Mike Quade said of Barney. “We talked at the beginning of spring about competition. He’s playing well and swinging the bat well and going about his business well. That’s a real nice trifecta for me.”

Barney is batting .382 so far.

Hi Carrie,

It’s good to see a kid from my neck of the woods performing well. As a high schooler Barney was always known as a slacker who got by on talent alone. It’s good to see what he can do when he puts his mind to it, eliminates juvenile distractions and focuses on the development of his game like a professional. When he was at Oregon State he played some of the best defense at the shortstop position that I’ve ever seen in my life. I hope he has a role on this team, but I fear that role is 2 at-bats per week and the occasional late inning defensive replacement or double switch candidate. I guess that’s a heckuvalot better than being a 4A player forever.
