3/24 Cubs trim 5: Scales, Ojeda, Moore, Camp, Perez

The Cubs trimmed five more players from the spring roster, optioning outfielder Fernando Perez to Triple-A Iowa and assigning Bobby Scales, Augie Ojeda, Scott Moore and Matt Camp to the Minor League camp. The moves leave 31 in camp, including 16 pitchers, four catchers, six infielders and five outfielders.

Perez hit .143 in 16 games. His departure means Reed Johnson has made the Opening Day roster. It also would appear that Darwin Barney has made his first Opening Day roster.

Ojeda has been bothered by back spasms, limiting him to seven games. Scales hit .375, Moore .342 and Camp .200.

Mannnn… I was rooting for Bobby Scales. Great spring batting average, he can play most positions… However, I’m happy for Reed and Darwin (if they are in fact on the opening day roster)

Scales would be more useful and valuable than DeWitt. But demoting or cutting DeWitt would be too embarrasing for Hendry. Scales gets the Hendry shaft.

Making these decisions is tough and I wouldn’t want the job, BUT Scales is the kind of player the Cubs need. He is fits into so many situations very well. What does the future hold for Bobby Scales?

Definitely should’ve gone with Bobby Scales. Glad we’re all in agreement. DeWitt has some things to work on. He could’ve used some time at Iowa. Scales has paid his dues in the minors and had a very good spring. Plus he hits from both sides of the plate and has at least a little speed. Poor decision here. What else does he have to do?

I think Quade would even agree with us but his hands are as tied as any other manager under Hendry. For once it would be nice to hear ANYBODY state “I would have gone a different route, but I didn’t make the final decision”. It won’t happen. Dewitt, Baker and Hill all should be replaced with more talented and less expensive kids who will also INCREASE THE TEAM’S CHANCE OF WINNING SOME BALL GAMES. With Soriano, Fukodome, Silva, Hill, DeWitt & Baker still on the team it doesn’t seem like that is Hendry’s priority.
