5/30 Cubs MVP Brady Cox
If the Cubs win on Monday, Brady Cox may have to stick around Wrigley Field for awhile. Cox, 16, is the son of Double-A Tennessee GM Brian Cox, and was the Cubs honorary bat boy on Monday. It’s quite a journey for the teen. At 4 1/2, he underwent a heart transplant. His mother, Cindy, said Brady had a heart defect and needed three surgeries. That was in 1999.
“The new heart got to Wrigley,” Cubs catcher Geovany Soto said.
Brady knows most of the players in the clubhouse — at least the ones who came up in the system. Dressed in his Cubs home white uniform, he got to shag during batting practice and was expected to be put to work during the game.
“When he came off the field, he said, ‘Pinch me, I think I’m dreaming,’” Brian said of his son.
Two years ago, Brady threw out a first pitch before a game at Wrigley. Now he’s the bat boy. What’s next, second base?
“Hopefully,” Brady said.
