6/6 Garza activated
The Cubs trimmed the long list of players on the disabled list by one when they activated pitcher Matt Garza on Monday. Scott Maine, one of four left-handers in the bullpen, was optioned to Triple-A Iowa to make room on the roster.
Garza, 27, had been sidelined with a bone contusion in his right elbow. His last start was May 17 against the Reds.
Mike Quade also said Monday he will use Rodrigo Lopez a little differently than he did on Sunday. Lopez was called on to face Albert Pujols in the 10th inning but gave up a walkoff homer to the Cardinals slugger.
“I don’t see him in a sitaution like I used him yesterday,” Quade said Monday. “I see him more in the middle, I see him more in longer outings. With four left-handers in the pen, some people say that’s a luxury. I thought it was too many.”
Expect Lopez to get an inning or two each week, more in middle innings than late.
