6/11 Gretzky & the Cubs
The Cubs were expected to talk this coming week to Trevor Gretzky about signing with the team. His famous dad, Wayne Gretzky, told ESPN 1000 on Friday he didn’t force his son to play hockey. The Cubs tabbed Trevor in the First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday. The family will sit down to discuss the pros and cons of whether Trevor will sign with the Cubs or go to San Diego State to play for Tony Gwynn.
Said Wayne: “It’s pretty tough for two parents, one [Janet Jones] who turned pro as a 17-year-old dancer, and started her professional career, and a father who turned pro at 17 to pursue a hockey career … pretty tough for us to talk about how great college would be when we both turned pro at such a young age. But he’s a little bit different than we are, and he’s a good student.”
Trevor is close with Christian Yelich, the Marlins’ first pick in 2010 who is playing at Class A Carolina. That may influence his decision as well.
