7/5 First time for everything
The Cubs’ Ramon Ortiz and the Nationals’ Ross Detwiler are both making their season debuts Tuesday. According to Elias Sports Bureau, it’s the first time in nearly five years that has happened in a non-September call-up situation. It last took place Aug. 22, 2006, when Seattle’s Cha Seung Baek faced the Yankees’ Jeff Karstens at Yankee Stadium.
Ortiz is the 10th starting pitcher the Cubs have used this season. The last time they used that many starters before the All-Star break was 2006, when they used 11. Ortiz was 6-3 with a 4.26 ERA in 16 starts for the Iowa Cubs. He struck out 81 over 99 1/3 innings.
