7/12 Jackson, Flaherty to Iowa

Highly touted prospect Brett Jackson, the Cubs’ No. 1 pick in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, and Ryan Flaherty, a second-round pick in 2008, were both promoted from Double-A Tennessee to Triple-A Iowa. Jackson and Flaherty were told after Monday’s game with the Smokies. The Cubs are expected to make an official announcement Thursday.

The Cubs also have promoted outfielder Jae-Hoon Ha from Class A Daytona to Tennessee, and Matt Szczur, who played in the All-Star Futures Game, will move up from Class A Peoria to Daytona.

Jackson, who turns 23 on Aug. 2, got off to a hot start with a .317 April but was sidelined with a hand injury. He was batting .273 in his last 11 games this month with three homers, one double and two stolen bases. In 67 games this season, he had 10 home runs, 10 doubles, three triples and 32 RBIs.

Flaherty, who has played first, second, shortstop, third and the outfield, was batting .305 in 83 games with 14 homers, 20 doubles, two triples and 66 RBIs.

Ha, who played 12 games for Tennessee from May 16-28 and hit .267 in that stretch, is back with the Smokies. He batted .276 with eight homers, 15 doubles, two triples and 47 RBIs in 71 games with Daytona.

Szczur, a former two-sport star at Villanova, batted .314 in 66 games with Peoria, hitting five home runs, 15 doubles, one triple and driving in 27 runs.
