7/15 Minor League report
Brett Jackson and Ryan Flaherty were both promoted from Double-A Tennessee to Triple-A Iowa and drove 14 hours to Des Moines in Flaherty’s car. They had time to discuss a lot of topics on their two-day trip. They’re now one step away from the big leagues.
“You can taste it now,” Jackson told the Des Moines Register. “You can really smell it. It motivates me more. I’m very thankful to be here and excited about the opportunity to play in Iowa.”
In his first game with the Iowa Cubs, Jackson hit a double. He batted .256 at Tennessee, and was on the DL because of a strained ligament in his left pinkie finger.
“In the long run, I think it will be useful, learning to adjust after an injury and going through a couple of slumps,” Jackson said. “Certainly, I’d rather be hitting .300. But all things considered, I’m happy with how the season has gone.”
Here’s a roundup of Thursday’s games:
* Tyler Colvin hit his seventh homer but it wasn’t enough as Iowa lost, 8-4, to Oklahoma City. Nick Struck took the loss, giving up five earned runs on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings.
* Brooks Raley gave up one run on five hits over seven innings in Tennessee’s 5-4 win over Mississippi. Luis Flores hit two homers and drove in three runs.
* Evan Crawford had four hits in Daytona’s 5-2, 10-inning win over Fort Myers. Justin Bour and Matt Cerda each had three hits.
* Austin Kirk gave up six runs on 10 hits over four innings in Peoria’s 10-2 loss to Lake County. Rubi Silva had three hits and scored two runs.
