8/8 Castro named NL Player of the Week

Starlin Castro was named National League Player of the Week for the period of Aug. 1-7. In seven games last week, Castro led the Majors with 17 hits, 10 runs scored and 25 total bases while also leading the NL with a .515 batting average (17-for-33). The 21-year-old ranked among league leaders with a .543 on-base percentage (third), a .758 slugging percentage (seventh) and seven RBI (Tied seventh), while hitting two home runs. Castro hit safely in all seven games last week and had multi-hit performances in six of those, including four three-hit efforts. The youngster’s bat played a key role in the Cubs’ 6-1 record.

Last Wednesday, Castro logged his third consecutive three-hit performance, going 3-for-4 with a game-winning solo home run in the eighth inning as the Cubs defeated the Pirates, 1-0. In Thursday’s game, Castro singled and scored the game-tying run in the eighth inning of an eventual 7-6 Cubs victory over the Pirates. On Saturday, he had four RBIs in an 11-4 win over the Reds. His four RBIs were the most since the six-RBIs barrage he unleashed in his ML debut on May 7, 2010, in Cincinnati.

With 150 hits this season, Castro leads the NL and ranks third in the Majors. His 19 games with three hits-or-more are the most in the NL and his 44 multi-hit games rank second. This is his second career weekly award, having won previously for the first week of the 2011 season (March 31-April 3).

* Other noteworthy performances last week included Castro’s teammate Carlos Zambrano, who was 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA.
