8/8 Cubs-Nationals ppd.; makeup Thursday
Monday’s game between the Cubs and Nationals was postponed because of rain and will be made up Thursday, which was an off day for both teams. How fitting is it that this happened on the anniversary of the Cubs’ first night game, Aug. 8, 1988, which also was postponed by rain.
Rain started Monday afternoon and the forecast called for precipitation throughout the evening. This is the Nationals’ only trip to Wrigley Field this year. This is the fourth Cubs game to be postponed because of rain. They’ve had 11 rain delays this season.
“It wasn’t my call,” Cubs manager Mike Quade said. “The people upstairs [in the front office] and the people looking at [the radar] know more than I do. I know there was rain back to Iowa or there abouts. I’m real good with not starting a game at 10 o’clock at night.”
The players reps from each team conferred and agreed on playing Thursday rather than a day-night doubleheader.
“I hate to lose an off day,” Quade said. “I would’ve been fine with a split. You need a secretary to know the rules and who’s got how many days in a row and everything else. I’m sure Koyie [Hill] or the player reps got together and that’s what they came up with. My sense is there are reasons for that. I know [the Nationals] were staying here instead of going to Philly on the off day [Thursday] which made me think they might want the off day more if they’re staying in Chicago — why wouldn’t you want an off day? I guess we’ll play Thursday.”
The pitching matchups will stay the same, which means Matt Garza (5-8, 3.78 ERA) will face Chien-Ming Wang (0-2, 6.00 ERA) on Tuesday, followed on Wednesday by Rodrigo Lopez (2-3, 5.17) against Ross Detwiler (1-1, 2.66), and on Thursday by Ryan Dempster (9-8, 4.87) against Jordan Zimmerman (7-9, 3.12).
