At this point its more annoying than anything to hear how well the minor leagues are doing, because we know they never get a chance with the vets in the way. It’s really sad that the front office is okay with these sorry vets.
Patience Jason, we have to be happy with the dismissal of Hendry and think of that as the first step of many baby steps in the right direction. Next is a new GM, then a new field manager. We’ve called for Hendry’s head for a long time and we got it. In less time than it took Hendry to decimate this team we may see a few more kids come up to challenge the likes of Soriano, Soto, Pena (if he comes back…… doh!), Byrd among others. If the new GM retains both Quade and Pena, we are in trouble as that would be indicative of complacency. We will not challenge for a World Series with Pena as our “clean up” hitter or Quade as our manager.
You’re right about that, it just gets hold having to hear about patience from an organization that constantly said they were two or three moves from contention, and followed that up with wait til next year, lol. I’ve seen some AA games and I really like what I see out of those kids, I’d love to see what they can do in the majors, and at this point there is nothing really blocking them talent wise in the bigs. Hopefully, like you said, a new manager and a new direction will be brought in and we can turn this thing around!
Jason, I’ve been a Cub fan forever and couldn’t agree with you more. Bring up some of these kids and lets see what they can do. The Cubs situation is also very similar to what is going on in politics as well these days. Youngsters see what is going on and change is needed but it will take time and patience. Another year or two to clear out some of these overpaid vets unless the Cubs decide to eat their contracts. If the Cubs could get Sandberg back he might be coming back when he can make the most impact with this new wave of talent.
Absolutely. The long overdue firing of Hendry did not mean all his mistakes were shown the door as well. It will take longer to rid the team of one dimensional players like Soriano than it did to fire Hendry. That is the price the Ricketts are paying…buy the Cubs…buy the Hendry mistakes with the Cubs. Trading Fukodome was a no-brainer ANY GM could have “accomplished”. Ridding the team of Soriano, his bad defense, his aging legs, his 25- 30 “token” homeruns, his strike outs not to mention the balance of his horrible contract will be quite a trick for the next GM. It may not happen and if not then it will be quite the trick for the next manager to ease Soriano out of the picture. Hendry’s illness will take some time to cure and a lot of money as well. The 2012 season will see Dempster (a middle of the road, hot or cold starter) pick up a 14 MILLION DOLLAR player option. Now really, would the new GM actually want Dempster for 14 MILLION? No, but Hendry HAD to structure the contract that way because Dempster was soooooooo valuable, just as he did Ramirez’s, Zambrano’s and others. Hendry left his mark like an unwanted tattoo gotten during a drunken binge and now the team is struggling to erase the blemish… not easy, but at least Ricketts started by FIRING Hendry, something to build on.
