9/19 Castro at 196 hits & counting
Starlin Castro singled to leadoff the seventh inning Monday for his National League-leading 196th hit and now has reached base safely in a career-high 32 straight games. He’s the first Cubs shortstop to have a streak that long since Woody English also had a 32-game run in 1930. Derrek Lee was the last Cubs player with a 32-game streak, doing so in 2007. Castro now has hit safely in 41 of his last 46 games. Castro is vying to become the youngest Cubs player ever to collect 200 hits in a single season. Billy Herman (206 hits in 1932) and Augie Galan (203 hits in 1935) were 23 when they reached the milestone. The last Cub to collect 200 hits was Juan Pierre, who had 204 in 2006.
