10/4 Vitters hits two HRs in AFL opener

Josh Vitters hit two home runs and drove in five in the Mesa Solar Sox’s 12-8 loss to the Phoenix Desert Dogs on Tuesday in the Arizona Fall League opener. Vitters, who started at first, is playing in the AFL for the third straight year. He went 2-for-4, hitting a three-run homer in the third and a two-run homer in the fifth. DJ LeMahieu was 0-for-2 with two walks and scored two runs. Junior Lake was the DH, and 0-for-3. Marcus Hatley gave up one run on three hits over 1 1/3 innings in relief.

Vitters is a natural hitter-no real science as to his plate appearances but the ball jumps off his bat real quick. Third base has been a disaster for him over the years as this graceful athlete finds multiple ways to make errors. One of the few Fall Ball players who does well and can not progress steadily. He is not intimidated by any pitcher and hopefully the Cubs will not give up on him.

I’ve seen him play in person a couple of times and overall he looks good, I just hope he learns to be more selective at the plate. When he does connect he kills it though. I really hope he continues his progress because he looks like he has some promise. It would be cool for him to be a future first base option too.

Agreed. Now with Hendry loooooooong gone there may very well be less giving up on some prospects. Or at least less Casey McGhee type of situations.
