10/6 AFL update

Cubs prospect Junior Lake went 3-for-4 with a single, double, solo homer and stole a base in the Mesa Solar Sox’s 10-4 loss to Phoenix on Wednesday in the Arizona Fall League. DJ LeMahieu was 1-for-4 and Josh Vitters, who hit two homers in the AFL opener Tuesday, was 0-for-4. Chris Carpenter struck out one in two innings of relief. On Thursday, the Solar Sox play host to the Surprise Saguaros at HoHoKam Park in Mesa. First pitch scheduled for 12:35 p.m. MT.

Junior Lake played rookie ball with Starlin Castro and they shared shortstop duties all season. Many scouts liked Junior but as the season progressed castro kept getting two or three hits and that was history. Junior has bulked up from a slim youngster and with his plus arm is a real threat to move starlin around the diamond. castro played a lot of third in rookie ball, He is probably the reason we let shortstop Lee go to Tampa. Castro was an anomaly in deveopment while Vitters and Lake are working through the process. Thank goodness we kept Oneri Fleita to protect these guys in case our new G.M. would not be aware of their upside. If Rhyno gets Mgr. he has worked for years with these two during extended spring training and instructional league and also coached vitters in Fall ball league with Mesa Solar Sox. bob brenly knows them well too as his son played with them including fall ball which is the real stepping stone to the bigs. I saw Lake play yesterday and he was impressive. vitters took advantage of strong winds at Phoenix with his two home runs but when he is at bat scouts become more than interested–teams have been trying to get him included in package deals ever since he was drafted.
