10/16 AFL & winter ball update
Junior Lake and DJ LeMahieu each had three hits to help Mesa beat Surprise, 14-3, on Saturday in Arizona Fall League play. Lake went 3-for-5, hitting a three-run homer and finishing with four RBIs while LeMahieu was 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Chris Carpenter struck out five of the six batters he faced in 1 2/3 innings of relief. After an off day Sunday, the Solar Sox play host to the Salt River Rafters on Monday at HoHoKam Park, with first pitch scheduled for 12:35 p.m. MT.
* Bryan LaHair hit another homer — his third this offseason — to help Magallanes beat Margarita, 9-0, in Venezuelan Winter League play on Saturday. LaHair, who hit 38 homers for Triple-A Iowa, was batting 7-for-17 (.42) in four games. Former Cubs right-hander Jerome Williams struck out six over six innings for the win.
* The Cubs Instructional League ended its month of play on Saturday in Mesa, Ariz.
