11/11 Zambrano to pitch Saturday

Carlos Zambrano had been scheduled to start Friday night for Caribes in the Venezuelan Winter League but apparently team officials decided they wanted the Cubs right-hander to take the mound Saturday. There’s nothing wrong — just a chance for a better crowd on Saturday. Zambrano went 2 2/3 innings in his first start in Venezuela.

Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein has been in contact with Zambrano’s agent, Barry Praver, and apparently talked to the pitcher on Tuesday. Zambrano told reporter Carlos Alberto Zambrano of the Venezuelan newspaper “Lider en Deportes” that he had talked to Epstein, who wanted to set up a personal meeting in the U.S.

“We talked for awhile,” Zambrano told the newspaper. “Now I’m waiting for him to tell me when we’ll meet. It might be after the Winter Meetings that the GMs have, which are in Milwaukee this year.”

The GM meetings begin Monday in Milwaukee.

“When I go to talk to [Epstein], it will be a short trip,” Zambrano said. “For example, supposing I pitch on Saturday, I’d leave the same night. We’d talk Sunday or Monday, and by Tuesday, I’d be on my way back to Venezuela. I’m not going for a week or even five days. It’ll be quick to meet each other, talk in person. That’s very important. I’d like to build a relationship from scratch with the new GM. Erase everything and start over.”

Zambrano is under contract with the Cubs for next season, with a vesting option for 2013. His last start was Aug. 12 in Atlanta when he served up five homers, then was ejected after throwing inside to Chipper Jones. Zambrano left the ballpark, saying he was retiring. He was placed on the 30-day restricted list, and the team then decided there wasn’t time left in the season for him to get in shape to pitch.

“Erase everything and start over.” How many times have we heard that, or something similar from Zambimbo?

I garauntee if Z comes back, Theo won’t tolderate his crap. There will be a very fine line Z will be required to walk if he really wants to stay a Cub. I dont think Hoyer and Theo would be affraid to release him if things got messy. The Cubs have a severe lack of starting pitching and to let him go at this point would be more detrimental than not. You dont want to put a bunch of young pitchers in there who are lacking the stamina to pitch 175 – 200 innings. We need Z as much as everyone wants him gone. There is no other way around it.

Hugo! Hugo! Hugo!

Just dump him. He needs to go! Ricketts! Eat his contract and move on!
Are trade him and eat about 85% of the contract. If you can find some fool to take him?

Are we ever going to see the end of this bad apple’s affiliation with the Cubs? A few months ago one of the professional writers on this site said it wasn’t likely he’d be part of the organization much longer. Yet they’re still talking about him as a possible Cub in 2012. I don’t get it. Don’t you excise the cancer and start healing as soon as possible?

Let’s be real. Without starters you can kiss the season goodbye before it starts. We know he can win. The Cubs pay him no matter where he goes. There is no downside here. He can win 15 games. Who have we got that you can say that about?

I agree. He is definately not the reason the Cubs have struggled the last two years. Clutch hitting, and the pen are the main reasons. The Cubs need him back. My feeling is that he will behave for the year with new owners, and knowing the team is going in the right direction.

Our main problem is getting a good first and third baseman. We have no rbi guys at the moment! That is scary! Also, Wood and Marmol played a strong part in losing nearly 20 games this past year. The eighth and 9th innings need to be nailed down.

Big Z is the Cubs best hitter. I think he batted .318 this year. He would probably be a better choice in left field than Soriano.

Bob L….LOVE IT!! Big Z would be better defensivley as well. What’s the worst that can happen if Big Z is in the starting rotation for 2012? He has another melt down? Big deal.
I think the whole organization is aware of that chance and THEN will pay him to be off the roster. I see no reason for the new regime to have THEIR chance of making the Hendry holdover, over paid bad boy behave…because if the Cubs can get 15 wins out of him, by gosh…that will rival the other Hendry holdover, over paid GOOD boy, the great and powerful Dempster. This team is screaming for somebody to take the ball and if Hendry can give Soriano, Fukodome, Dempster, Grabow, Miles, BAD BOY BRADLEY (the list goes on) all players the Cubs DIDN’T NEED ON THE TEAM, a chance, then why can’t Hoyer give Zambrano a chance? At least it would be for a pitcher, an actual NEED.
