11/18 Sveum begins search for coaching staff
Dale Sveum was named the Cubs’ new manager on Friday, and first up will be to determine his coaching staff. Sveum planned to meet with Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer to discuss some options. Holdovers from the Cubs’ 2011 staff include Rudy Jaramillo, Pat Listach and Lester Strode; they all have contracts for next season.
One rumor was that Hall of Famer Robin Yount would join Sveum.
“That’s not going to happen,” Sveum said. “He’s my best friend in the world but that’s not going to happen.”
What is Sveum looking for in a bench coach?
“I think he needs to be very close to me personally,” Sveum said. “It has to be a very good friend of mine, somebody I respect, baseball knowledge-wise, somebody who can slow the game down, especially the National League game, and the ability to tell me to get my [stuff] together. At the same time, we have to yell at each other and still be friends. That has to be somebody really close to you who you have a lot of confidence in and are very good friends with.”
It may take longest to name a new pitching coach, Sveum said.
“I have an idea of names who I’m going to interview,” he said. “There are a couple guys who are high on my list who I want to interview.”
