12/5 What if Pujols & Fielder leave NL Central?

With both Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder free agents, there’s a chance that at least one, if not both, could be out of the National League Central next season. Does that possibility of not having to face the two sluggers affect how Theo Epstein goes about his business with the Cubs?

“I try not to focus on that too much,” Epstein said Monday. “There’s a lot of work to do here. There’s a pretty big gap between where we are now and where we want to go, both at the Major League level and as an organization more broadly so. I think if we start tracking whether an opposing team might be a 91-win team or a 96-win team, it’s probably not the best use of our time.

“We need to try to build our own operation up to a point where we feel pretty good about consistently delivering a team that’s going to be a strong playoff contender,” he said. “There will always be good teams in this division — I think it’s an underrated division — and whether or not these impact bats stay or go, if they go, those teams are going to have more Draft picks and more resources available to them to improve the rest of their club. If they stay, those guys are tough to get out. Either way, I don’t think it will impact what we’re trying to do.”

Theo is a man with a deep plan. Here cometh the Cubs winter rookie academy. Here cometh the shoulder care program for pitchers. Here comes a zillion other small pieces The guy makes mosaics.

I haven’t been this excited about a Cubs team for a while now. I’m most eager to see if Theo can find someone to take Soriano’s contract. If Theo can unload his contract, I think it will be a wild off season.

The Chicago Tribune is reporting the Cubs submitted a bid for Albert Pujols this morning; any truth to that Carrie?

Mavbe it was a BIB they submitted? To help Pujols keep the drool off his St. Louis or Miami jersey as he salivates over the RIDICULOUS amount of money and time two NATIONAL LEAGUE, DH-LESS, teams are offering him. And on that BIB is an embroidered Jim Hendry signature because a deal like that would have his name all over it.
Hoyer and Epstein certainly can’t go down the same old path that Hendry made deep ruts…can they?

No, I definitely don’t expect them to sign him whether they submitted a bid or not. If anything I expect them to submit a bid close to the Cardinals bid to flatter Pujols even though he will turn it down and maybe even sour him against the Cardinals for not offering more based on what he has done for them. I was just curious if a bid was actually submitted because it was supposedly confirmed by sources but denied by Carrie in another report.
