12/23 Winter league update

Bryan LaHair keeps on hitting. LaHair hit a pair of solo homers, including a tie-breaking blast in the eighth inning, to help Magallanes beat La Guaira, 5-4, in Venezuelan Winter League play on Thursday. LaHair, who led all Minor Leaguers in 2011 with 38 homers, now has 14 in Venezuela. Cubs prospect Rebel Ridling went 2-for-3 in the game.

It’s looking better and better to save a lot of money by having LaHair at first next year. That being said, hopefully we spend some money to sure up other positions in the meantime…maybe some quality pitching or eat some large contract money and trade for a more quality third baseman?

I would think that Epstein is “content” with gambling on Stewart coming back strong in 2012, a long shot but not much to lose. If large contract money is to be eaten by keeping LaHair at first and keeping Fielder money off the books I pray it is Soriano’s contract that is eaten, opening up RF for a much more competent, all around player.
What else does LaHair have to do to be THE option at first base….come from Boston???

Joey! It seems that only Carrie is paying any attention to the awesome accomplishments of Bryan LaHair that are on-going. I met him in Phoenix after watching him hit a bomb into a palm tree. He is very modest and really a big guy. He comes to Springtraining in late Jan. although this year I hope he takes a little rest. If he does not do well you know we will have to wear hoodies all summer, Merry Christmas!

I know Ty!! Just our luck that come spring training LaHair will be “tired” and it won’t take much for him to be pushed back on the depth chart. Oh well, we can remain optimistic as we will have a new first baseman! Right??? I mean, they can’t bring Pena back….Merry Christmas to U2!!

A lot of people are clamoring for Fielder or Rizzo, but I am perfectly happy in seeing LaHair given a chance. If my calculations are right, between the minors, time on the Cubs, and in the Winter league totaled, LaHair has 54 bombs this year! If he can even just hit 20 homeruns next year I think his league minimum salary will be a steal!
