1/17 Wining & dining Cespedes

Could the Cubs have the inside track with Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes?

“Of all the teams that have approached us, the one that has had the most interest in me has been the Chicago Cubs,” Cespedes told the Associated Press in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. “I have had dinner a couple of times [with Cubs officials] and we have talked a lot but that doesn’t mean that I am going to sign with them. I am only telling it like it is, they have shown more interest than others.”

Jose Serra, the Cubs’ director of Latin American scouting, attended Cespedes’ game Monday. The Cuban outfielder is playing in the Dominican winter league.

Soriano and maybe Byrd should be nervous. Carrie, with Detroit’s Victor Martinez out for all of 2012 with a torn ACL any word of Epstein pawning off Soriano to the Tigers for the open DH spot?

Tigers will get cespedes

Chip….you certainly know how to kill some of my buzz. But even if the Cubs do not acquire Cespedes can I PLEASE cling to (at least for a lttle while longer…) my dream of Epstein unloading our sack of potatoes to the Tigers as their DH???

I saw recently that the Yankees were looking for a DH. They also signed SP Hiroki Kuroda. This suggests to my mind a possible trade with the Cubs sending Alfonso Soriano to the Yankees nfor one of their young starting pitchers, like Ivan Nova or Phil Hughes. What do you think? Any chance of this happening?

I wouldn’t bet any money on getting players like Nova or Hughes in exchange for Soriano, no matter how much money the Cubs pick up. More than likely picking up about 80% of Soriano’s money in exchange for one or two A ball players would be more like it.
