3/3 Sunday’s Cubs lineup
Alfonso Soriano will lead off for the Cubs in Sunday’s Cactus League opener against the Athletics at HoHoKam Park. The only regular not playing will be catcher Geovany Soto, who is still nursing a sore groin. Soto has been able to take batting practice; he just can’t catch yet. Welington Castillo, one of the candidates for the backup catcher’s position, will start. Rodrigo Lopez was slated to start and other pitchers on the lineup card who could see action include Carlos Marmol, Rafael Dolis, Dae-Eun Rhee, Lendy Castillo and Marcos Mateo. Here’s the lineup:
LF Soriano
3B Stewart
SS Castro
1B LaHair
CF Byrd
RF DeJesus
DH Baker
2B Barney
C Castillo
– Carrie Muskat

Holy crap. This lineup-scimmage game or not is depressing.
The only advantage I can see with having Soriano leading off is he will get more AB’s which can only help expose him as JUST a homerun hitter (and not a very good one) with little else to contribute. Batting him lead off based only on his past numbers in that position when he was much younger and could run is insane. Truly a sign that not even Sveum knows what to do with this albatross of a player. Epstein has to work some magic and move Soriano to a less emabarrassing DH role and do it fast before Sveum lets his hair grow…just to pull it out.
