3/10 Cubs 6, Brewers 1

What went right:

Starlin Castro hit his first spring homer with one out in the fourth and Darwin Barney smacked a RBI triple in the fifth to back Ryan Dempster. In his second spring start, Dempster gave up two hits and walked two over three innings. Ian Stewart had two hits, both singles. Geovany Soto also returned to the lineup, his first game action. Joe Mather, fighting for a bench spot, is batting .500 this spring.

What went wrong:

Marcos Mateo served up Alex Gonzalez’s solo homer in the Brewers seventh.

Quotable:

“Just a few years ago, the Cubs won 96, 97 games. That was a pretty good team. They had a tough time last year. You can’t make 130 errors and you can’t have a 4.50 earned run average. That’s just things you have to tidy up as a whole team as well as personnel and all those kind of things.” — Cubs manager Dale Sveum

Notable:

Dale Sveum says Alfonso Soriano will likely bat fourth or fifth in the Cubs lineup this year, and David DeJesus will be the leadoff man.

“I know I scared you guys a little bit, putting him in the leadoff spot, but that was goofing around with lineups and getting guys at-bats real quick,” Sveum said.

DeJesus was 0-for-3 on Saturday vs. the Brewers.

“He’s really our only bonafide on-base guy who obviously can hit and he hits left-handed,” Sveum said. “He brings all the intangibles that nobody else in the lineup brings to the table.”

Up next:

Matt Garza makes his second spring start on Sunday when the Cubs travel to Glendale to face the Dodgers. The game will be broadcast on WGN TV and also Cubs.com. It will start

Injury update:

Jason Jaramillo started hitting on Friday for the first time since he was sidelined with soreness in both legs.
