3/11 Cubs sign Cuban pitcher Concepcion
The Cubs agreed to terms on a five-year, $6 million contract with left-handed pitcher Gerardo Concepcion, who was the Cuban National Series Rookie of the Year last year. Concepcion, who turned 20 in February, was 10-3 with a 3.36 ERA in 21 games. At the age of 19, he placed among overall league leaders in wins (tied for sixth), winning percentage (second at .769) and earned run average (ninth). A season earlier, the 6-foot-2 lefty pitched for Havana in the Cuban Junior National Tournament, and was 2-2 with a 3.06 ERA in 15 appearances, six as a starter. He struck out 39, walked 15 and did not allow a home run over 47 innings. Concepcion will report to the Cubs’ Minor League camp. The Cubs 40-man roster is now at 40.
