4/1 Bullpen decisions
The Cubs have eight relievers in camp for seven spots, and may not make a final decision until Wednesday when the 25-man roster has to be set. The list includes Carlos Marmol, Kerry Wood, and James Russell, who are set. Also competing for spots are Rafael Dolis, Shawn Camp, Rodrigo Lopez, Lendy Castillo and Manuel Corpas. Dolis has not given up a run in nine innings over eight games, striking out five and walking four. Corpas, who is coming back from Tommy John surgery in 2010, has served up six runs on eight hits over 9 2/3 innings in eight games. He’s struck out 11. Castillo, the Rule 5 pick, has appeared in 10 games, giving up five earned runs on 10 hits and 10 walks over 12 innings. He has 11 strikeouts. Dale Sveum has said he’s impressed by Castillo’s poise, considering he’s 22, relatively new to pitching (he was a shortstop), and was at Class A last year. Camp was claimed off waivers from the Mariners. So far this spring, he has given up five earned runs on 14 hits over 11 2/3 innings. Lopez will likely take over as the long man in the ‘pen.
