5/3 Birthday boy
Ryan Dempster will start the series finale against the Reds on Thursday, which is his 35th birthday. The last Cubs starting pitcher to earn the victory on his b-day was Randy Wells, who won Aug. 28, 2010, over the Reds. The last Cubs pitcher to throw a complete game on his birthday was Rick Reuschel, who did so May 16, 1978, in a 4-3 loss to the Giants. Dempster is the first Cubs pitcher to start on his birthday in consecutive seasons since Reuschel did so May 16 in both 1978 and ’79.
