5/6 DeWitt designated for assignment
Infielder Blake DeWitt was designated for assignment on Sunday to make room on the 25-man roster for Travis Wood, who is starting Sunday in place of Matt Garza. DeWitt was batting .138 in 18 games with the Cubs, who hope he clears waivers and will accept a Minor League assignment. Garza was scratched from Sunday’s game because he is sick and was scheduled to start Friday against the Brewers.
“Because of the flu bug, it cost somebody his job,” Cubs manager Dale Sveum said Sunday.
Ian Stewart is the latest one affected and was not available on Sunday. Joe Mather started at third base.
