5/7 Cardenas to Cubs – UPDATED

Adrian Cardenas was recalled from Triple-A Iowa and joined the Cubs on Monday. Travis Wood was optioned back to Triple-A Iowa on Monday and with Blake DeWitt gone, the Cubs want to add another infielder to the 25-man roster. Cardenas, a left-handed hitter, was claimed off waivers from the Athletics, and batting .319 in 26 games with seven doubles, three triples and two homers. He’s played primarily second base. What’s impressive about Cardenas is he has struck out five times and drawn 11 walks.

“It’s been a long road,” said Cardenas, 24. “To finally get here is unbelievable. It’s time now to readjust your goals and the object here is to win ballgames and hopefully stick, so that’s what I’m going to do my best at. First and foremost, I’m thrilled and excited.”

He expected 18 family and friends at Monday’s game against the Braves just in case he gets in the game for his Major League debut.

“The guy can hit,” Dale Sveum said of Cardenas. “He can square a ball up. He’s got good bat speed. He gives us another nice left-handed bat off the bench. He’ll play, too. We’ve got to get that left-handed bat in the lineup.”

This is Cardenas’ first trip to Chicago. He had a chance to come earlier when the team claimed him but wanted to wait until he got the call.

“I wanted the first time I get here to be when I got called up,” he said. “I didn’t realize Lake Michigan is so big.”

Good to see another kid with promise given a shot, whether as a back up or even to push some guys to get better.

What? With those stats, why did the A’s let him go?

am told the A’s thought that he was more interested in his education than baseball. that’s not true. Cardenas is able to do both.

really hope Cardenas pans out… could be a nice piece for the cubs… he is Barney 2.0… faster, better hitter but is most likely a down grade defensively

Sounds better than DeWitt though, right? THIS move is more in line with what we were told would happen under Hoystein and the Ricketts. No more DeWitts etc.
