5/18 Volstad to Iowa; Lalli up

Chris Volstad, winless in his last 19 starts, was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Friday. Volstad has not spent a full season in the big leagues since he made his big league debut in 2008. The struggling right-hander dropped to 0-6 this season with a loss Thursday to the Phillies. Dale Sveum met Friday with Theo Epstein, Jed Hoyer, and pitching coach Chris Bosio to discuss Volstad’s fate. The right-hander lasted two innings on Thursday, giving up four runs on six hits. His next scheduled start was Tuesday in Houston, but expect Travis Wood to take his spot. Wood started Thursday for Iowa and got the win, giving up two runs over seven innings. The addition of Blake Lalli gives the Cubs a backup catcher. Geovany Soto has a sore knee and will need arthroscopic surgery.

Finally. Good to see Hoystein is not letting pride stand in the way of roster moves. If a player is CONTINUALLY UNDERPERFORMING such as Volstad and So…. (well, I’ll leave it at that) he should be placed with a better option whether it’s a minor leaguer that deserves a shot or a bench player. Campana for Byrd is working out….

what about Randy Wells? i can’t understand his seemingly permanent demotion.

Look at Wells’ numbers at Iowa. He hasn’t been consistent.
