6/15 Dempster stays focused

Ryan Dempster has told the Cubs he’ll listen if they decide to move him prior to the Trading Deadline. He has veto rights as a 5-and-10 player. He put all the rumors aside on Friday and threw seven scoreless innings in a 3-0 win over the Red Sox.

“He’s one of the most professional, hard-working people you’re ever going to be around,” Dale Sveum said. “When he steps out on the mound, it’s all game-on with him. It’s not trade rumors, or ‘Where am I going to go?'”

Dempster said he focuses on what he can control.

“We have a great group of guys in there who are working hard every day and things haven’t gone like we wanted them to go but we keep pressing forward and doing what we need to do,” he said. “I’m just trying to do my job and go out every fifth day and give them a chance to win a ballgame.”

Does he think about the rumors between starts?

“I’m not naive,” he said. “I’m not oblivious to what’s going on. If I focused on that and worried about that, I wouldn’t be doing a very good job as a teammate to those guys in there and I wouldn’t be doing a very good job to myself if I wasn’t focusing on what I need to do. Whatever happens, ends up happening. Right now I’m here and I love being here and everybody knows that. I love the city of Chicago and playing for the Cubs.”
