7/2 Extra bases
* Luis Valbuena notched his first multi-double game since April 22, 2010, vs. the Twins. He notched his third three RBI game of the season, and is 6-for-21 in his last seven games. Valbuena, who has taken over at third for Ian Stewart, out for the year with a wrist injury, now has 13 RBIs. Stewart had 17 before being sidelined.
“He keeps driving in runs in bunches,” Sveum said. “You look up and you think he’s hitting about .340 but he’s only hitting .250. He’s getting big hits and his slugging percentage and everything like that is huge. I wish I’d had him all year.”
* The Cubs must make a roster move to make room for Chris Volstad, who will start Tuesday. Expect Casey Coleman to be optioned to Triple-A Iowa.
* Outfielder David DeJesus was day to day with a stiff neck, but was expected back in the Cubs lineup on Tuesday.
* Double-A Tennessee second baseman Logan Watkins and pitcher Nick Struck were named the Cubs’ Minor League player and pitcher of the month for June. Watkins, 22, batted .352 with three doubles, three triples, one home run and 11 RBIs in 23 June games. He had a season-high 13-game hitting streak, in which he batted .375, from June 13-30. Struck, 22, was 4-1 with a 2.45 ERA in five June starts, walking eight and striking out 23, while limiting the opponent to a .181 batting average. He gave up three or fewer runs in all five of his outings and recorded three quality starts.
