7/31 Dempster to Rangers

Ryan Dempster apparently said yes to the Rangers. The Cubs’ makeover continued Tuesday when they traded Dempster to the defending American League champions, finalizing the deal minutes before the 3 p.m. CT Trade Deadline. The Cubs get two Class A players in return.

The 35-year-old right-hander, who ranks among the National League leaders with a 2.25 ERA, had favored a deal to the Dodgers but apparently altered his wish list. The Yankees also were believed to be in talks with the Cubs. <p> The Cubs thought they had a deal last week which would’ve sent Dempster to the Braves but the right-hander exercised his 10-and-5 rights (10 years of service, five with the same team) and rejected that move. He had given Theo Epstein, Cubs president of baseball operations, a list of teams he would prefer.

Dempster will be a pure rental. Players must be with a team for an entire season in order to qualify for draft-pick compensation. This is in the last year of his four-year contract with the Cubs, which was paying him $14 million this season. His career has come full circle. Dempster was selected by the Rangers in the third round of the 1995 First-Year Player Draft by the Rangers, then traded in ’96 to the Marlins.

2 Class A players???? For Ryan Dempster? You gotta be kidding. Those boys better rock the entire MLB when they come up (and they better still be playing for the Cubs at that point).

Class A+. We got a 3B and a pitcher.

Look, Class A is way better than Class C.

After all that has happened….I’ll take the two class A players and MOVE ON.

Cubs get third baseman Christian Villanueva and right-handed pitcher Kyle Hendricks, both from Class A Myrtle Beach.

A Win – Win for the Cubs today…..Dempster is gone…and the Cubs get two prospects that they can groom for the future……plus, Dempster will not have to hear all those boos if he took the mound…..

“A” league players are great o have…..here is why……

“Rookie League” players are the ones you just drafted this year….can’t trade them in the first year…
“A” type players are guys you can groom into your team’s ideology……
“AA” type players are at a point of their career if they can help your major league club or be future car salesmen……..
“AAA” players, these guys are rejects from other teams or 6 year minor league players who can fill in and help a major league club in short periods……a dime a dozen……

Theo does not have to worry of offering money to Dempster to get a draft pick…we have two prospects in return now….

Now the waiver period begins…….Jeff Baker might go……and should!….maybe there is someone who is willing to take on Soriano like how Kenny Williams took on Alex Rios!…..

then winter meetings begins……no doubt Matt Garza will go after his little tweet today……bitter that Theo will make him suffer longer in Chicago now……
Maybe the Dodgers or some other playoff team who gets bounced in the first round of the playoffs will come back and seek a Matt Garza for their staff…..three top prospects is the asking price……

Tonight, it all starts with Casey Coleman……OMG…….WHAT?…..you want Chris Volstad back on the mound at Wrigley?……would anyone settle for Rodrigo Lopez?

I am happy Dempster is gone…..his best years are behind him…..has a chance to be in a World Series…..something he failed to do as a Cubs player……..and we are getting closer of removing all the “Hendry Boys” from this roster…….so sit back and watch the pretty ladies in the stands.

The Cubs Future is getting brighter!

I FEEL LIKE WE HAVE BEEN PLUCKED OF ALOT OF OUR BEST PLAYERS
FOR A FEW ‘STILL IN TRAINEES’. DEMPSTER, MAHOLM, JOHNSON – THE
BEST OF THE BEST FOR ‘MAYBE THEY WILL WORK OUTS AND MAYBE
THEY WON’T WORK OUTS”. IF THIS IS WHAT IS CALLED REBUILDING,
IT SUCKS.

Dempster should have gone a long time ago. I know that he has done a lot for Chicago but my memory still goes back to when he pitched in the first game vs. the Dodgers in the playoffs and did not do well. I wish him well here in Dallas and hope he gets his ring.

We did not “lose” anything by trading Dempster…..he’s Ryan Dempster not Greg Maddux. Had to be done and easily accepted. Bye Dempster thanks for all..for all…your mediocre, up and down seasons and saviing your “best stuff” for your walk year!!!

you know what sucks more than rebuilding, white? being mediocre every single year. or, if you’re a team lucky enough to have a bit of spending money, to decide you’re going to ‘go for it’ by arbitrarily throwing money at a few free agents and hoping it leads you the WS, then being disappointed (and stuck with bloated contracts) when it doesn’t. this process of rebuilding is the formula which can lead to future sustained success. let me say that again, because i think you’re slow to understand what the goal is here. sustained success. a strong system internally that continues to produce good, affordable talent year after year, and can be used to trade for other high-level talent when the timing is right.
if ryan dempster, paul maholm and reed johnson are your idea of the “BEST OF THE BEST”, then rebuilding will always be a baffling process to you, because your standards are already so absurdly low.
i apologize if you are 12 years old or something. if you’re not, please feel free to turn off the caps locks on your keyboard. there’s no need for screaming. :)

NO I AM NOT 12 YRS. OLD. I AM 76 YRS. OLD AND HAVE MULTIPLE SCHLEROSIS.
I USE CAPS SO THAT I CAN SEE, NOT SCREAM. MY STANDARDS ARE NOT LOW.
I WILL MISS THE PLAYERS WHO WERE TRADED – IS THAT SUCH A CRIME?
I KNOW WE ARE REBUILDING BUT IT SADDENS ME TO SAY GOODBYE TO PLAYERS
I HAVE ENJOYED WATCHING. REBUILDING IS NOT BAFFLING, IT IS DIFFICULT.
SO DON’T BE SO CONDESCENDING TO THOSE OF US WHO MISS OUR PLAYERS.
I AM SURE WE WILL ALL ADJUST TO ENJOYING NEW PLAYERS BUT RIGHT NOW
I DON’T FEEL SO HAPPY.
