8/3 Minor League report
* The Cubs named Javier Baez and Brooks Raley the Minor League player and pitcher of the month for July on Friday.
Raley gave up six runs on 10 hits over six innings in Iowa’s 7-4 loss to Colorado Springs. It was Iowa’s sixth straight loss. Greg Rohan had two hits and five RBIs in his second Triple-A game. Josh Vitters had three hits, stole a base and scored a run.
Jake Brigham, acquired from the Rangers for Geovany Soto, made his debut Thursday and took the loss in Tennessee’s 6-1 loss to Pensacola. He gave up three runs on five hits over three innings. Logan Watkins had two hits, including his fifth home run, and now has 40 RBIs. Watkins broke up a perfect game by Wilfin Obispo with his home run in the fourth.
Christian Villanueva had quite the debut for the Cubs, hitting two home runs for Class A Daytona in his first game, an 8-2 win. The third baseman also drew a walk. Acquired from the Rangers in the Ryan Dempster deal, Villanueva homered on the third and fourth pitches he saw, according to the Daytona Beach News Journal. Roni Torreyes, acquired in the Sean Marshall trade, hit his sixth home run. He finished with three RBIs.
Dustin Geiger had three hits, including his 14th home run, in Peoria’s 6-4 loss to Quad Cities. It was Geiger’s third home run in the last two games. Starling Peralta took the loss, despite striking out six over five innings.
James Pugliese gave up five runs — none earned — over five innings in Boise’s 15-1 loss to Spokane. Daniel Vogelbach hit a RBI single in the first for the only run. The Hawks had a rough night as their bus had trouble, and they had to wait six hours for another.
Jorge Soler hit a double and drove in two runs in Mesa’s 6-5 win over the Angels. Albert Almora had two hits, including a double, and scored two runs. Shawon Dunston Jr. also had two hits and scored a run.
