8/14 Extra bases

* On Tuesday, Chris Volstad will try to snap a 22-start winless streak, dating to July 17, 2011. He’s 0-13 with a 5.44 ERA in that span. The odds are in his favor. Volstad is 3-0 in five starts against the Astros.

* Alfonso Soriano is two RBIs shy of 1,000 in his career. He looks to become the sixth player in Major League history to total 1,000 RBIs, 400 doubles, 350 home runs and 250 stolen bases. The others include Barry Bonds, Andre Dawson, Willie Mays, Alex Rodriguez and Gary Sheffield.

Soriano has 10 RBIs in his last nine games and has stolen a base in three of his last seven games. His 25 doubles are two shy of the 27 he collected all of last year. He has 21 home runs, giving him 11 consecutive 20 home run seasons.

* Rookie Anthony Rizzo posted his second four-hit game of the season on Monday, going 4-for-5 with a run and a RBI. Rizzo, who also had four hits July 6 against the Mets, is one of just four NL rookies with a pair of four-hit games this year. The others include the Padres’ Yonder Alonso, the Cardinals’ Matt Carpenter and the Nationals’ Steve Lombardozzi.

OK, one would have to think if Volstad can’t beat the ASTROS….we can then finally pull the plug on a wasted roster spot? Just chalk up the Zambrano trade as taking a bad Hendry contract on the chin, a gamble that did not pay off. This should be his last chance of sticking on the 40 man roster. He has had more opportunity than a lot of pitchers have been given.

Seems like things get a little slow around this blog when I’m not there to stir the stew. At this point, all rookie auditions are agreed to by the manager and the VP/GM which would include the lineups. If Lah-“Air” sits it’s been agreed upon with a forward look (I actually see promise in LaHair). Really don’t see much positive with Volstad to this point, so they must see something I’m missing.

Cut our loses….do not tender contract to Volstad.
