8/21 No comment re: possible Peoria move
There are reports that the Cubs are in the process of working out a player development agreement with the Kane County Cougars in an effort to move their Midwest League affiliate from Peoria. The switch, reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, would move the Cubs’ Class A team closer to Chicago, and end a relationship with the Chiefs that began in the 1980s. Instead of a 166-mile drive, the Class A team would be 50 miles away.
Cubs player development director Jason McLeod told MLB.com on Tuesday the team will have no comment about the Minor League teams until the season is over.
In 1985, the Chiefs became a member of the Cubs farm system, and featured players such as Greg Maddux, Rafael Palmeiro, Mark Grace and Joe Girardi. The affiliation with the Cubs lasted until 1994, when the Chicago team moved its Class A squad to Rockford. In mid September 2004, the Chiefs announced they were joining the Cubs again, beginning with the ’05 season.
