9/8 Extra bases
* Jeff Samardzija will make his 28th and final start of the season on Saturday. The Cubs have decided Samardzija has reached his innings limit for the season. He has totaled 165 2/3 innings, and is shy of his total 169 2/3 innings total accumulated in four big league seasons entering this year. Samardzija pitched exclusively in relief last year and totaled 88 innings over 75 outings.
Samardzija is finishing strong, posting a 2.66 ERA (19 ER/64 1/3 IP) in 10 starts since the All-Star break. That’s the fourth lowest by any pitcher in the NL with at least 10 starts since the break. Overall, his 171 strikeouts rank eighth in the NL.
* The Cubs have used a single-season club record 52 different players this year. The previous mark was 51, set in 2000. Newly-acquired right-handed pitcher Jason Berken, claimed off waivers from the Orioles, will up this year’s tally to 53 players. He’s expected to take over Samardzija’s spot in the Cubs rotation for the final weeks.
* The Cubs will be looking for their first back-to-back road wins since July 23-24.
* Darwin Barney has gone an NL single-season record 123-straight games without an error at second base, and has now tied Ryne Sandberg’s overall NL record 123-game errorless streak. Sandberg’s streak ran from June 21, 1989, to May 17, 1990. The Major League record for a single-season errorless streak by a second baseman is 141 games, set in 2007 by Placido Polanco with the Tigers.
