9/9 Looking ahead
With Jeff Samardzija ending his season early on Saturday, Cubs manager Dale Sveum can look ahead to the 2013 rotation. Samardzija and Matt Garza are good places to start.
“You’ve got two guys who are on the verge or capable of being the shutdown No. 1 type guys with the stuff they have,” Sveum said. “You have two guys who throw 95 miles an hour and have command and have secondary pitches and the will to do it and go out there and pitch nine innings. It’s a pretty good place to start going into Spring Training.”
However, the Cubs will likely add more pitchers before camp opens in Mesa, Ariz., in mid February.
“There’s obviously some pieces we have to put together,” Sveum said. “The more competition and the more you have, the better you’ll be.”
Samardzija was shutdown after Saturday’s game because he’d reached his innings limit in his first full season as a starter, while Garza is on the disabled list with a right elbow stress reaction, and will not throw again this season.
