10/24 Cubs claim Gutierrez
The Cubs claimed right-handed pitcher Carlos Gutierrez off waivers from the Twins. Catcher Anthony Recker was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. Gutierrez, 26, was originally selected by the Twins in the first round of the 2008 Draft. He has gone 15-20 with a 4.11 ERA in 136 appearances (32 starts) over the last five seasons in the Twins’ Minor League system. Last season, he was 2-2 with a 5.06 ERA in 10 relief appearances with Triple-A Rochester, striking out 20 and walking three batters over 16 innings. His season ended in mid June because of a right shoulder injury that required surgery in July. Gutierrez resumed throwing earlier this month. Recker was acquired by the Cubs from the Orioles on Aug. 27, and batted .167 in nine games.
