12/12 Cubs claim Rosario
The Cubs added another arm to the bullpen mix when they claimed right-handed pitcher Sandy Rosario off waivers from the Red Sox. Rosario, 27, has been active on the transaction wire. The Red Sox acquired him off waivers from the Marlins on Oct. 17, and he was designated for assignment on Nov. 20. Eight days later, he was dealt to the Athletics for right-hander Graham Godfrey. The Athletics then designated Rosario for assignment two days later. On Dec. 10, the Red Sox claimed him again off waivers.
Last season, he combined for 17 saves and a 1.99 ERA in 31 Minor League games between the Marlins’ Triple-A, Double-A and Class A teams. Rosario missed nearly two months on the disabled list because of a strained right quad. He’s had limited appearances over the last three seasons with the Marlins, totaling 7 2/3 innings, and made four appearances in June with the big league team. At Triple-A New Orleans, Rosario posted a 1.04 ERA with 16 saves in 25 games, striking out 24 over 26 innings. This winter, he’s been pitching for Gigantes del Cibao in the Dominican, appearing in 12 games through Dec. 8. He has 13 strikeouts and issued five walks over 11 1/3 innings.
Cubs manager Dale Sveum may remember Rosario. Sveum was with Milwaukee when the pitcher made his Major League debut on Sept. 23, 2010, for the Marlins, and the Brewers’ Rickie Weeks and Prince Fielder hit his first and third pitches for home runs.
Rosario is the third new arm added to the Cubs’ bullpen, joining Japanese pitcher Kyuji Fujikawa, who signed a two-year deal last Friday, and Hector Rondon, who was selected in the Rule 5 Draft. With the addition of Rosario, the Cubs’ 40-man roster is now at 40.

Actually a quad injury is not a pitching arm and between the lines it appears he may have some quality. No doubt our scouts are out there looking underneath the bandages and casts for something good.

Nothing wrong with this “gamble”. Compared to the 2.5 mil spent on the Schierholtz gamble….and HE’S an outfielder also coming off an injury and according to baseballrefernce.com has shown next to no run production…ever…we already HAVE those kind of outfielders. At least this is a gamble on a PITCHER and isn’t taking 2.5 mil from the payroll fund that could have been used….ON PITCHING. Schierholtz….still wondering about that one…
Granted what you say about Schierholtz is true and I have not looked at his stats, but he has never had a full season. Also, isnt his career OBP pretty good for a part time player?
I have not looked that up yet. I think the OBP was down last year due to the injury, not sure?
OBP’s: Schierholtz = .319, Soriano = .323, DeJesus = .355, Sappelt = .314 Hard to make a case why Hosytein persued Schierholtz considering the type of “talent” already on the roster and his injury. It’s not like if given a chance to recover from an injury Schierholtz will return to form…what form????
Cubs signed Chang Yong Lim for five mil? Won’t be “ready” until 2014? Coming off his SECOND Tommy John surgery? Yikes. I am now starting to have some doubts about the new “philosophy”. Is it now REQUIRED to have previous surgeries in order to be considered by Hoystein? TWO Tommy John surgeries MUST be better than one….I guess. C’mon Hoystein, the jury is still out but it may be conveining sooner than later.
We can guess that a newly hired stat freak is locked up in a closet office at Wrigley making these decisions. Some people say so what–it is not costing us much to roll the dice. Well, Lim is coming to Fitch field with his own personal trainer and interpreter soon and will rehab for a year and beyond. Somebody add up all these so called cheap transactions–include air flights etc. Interesting scenario for a big market team.
only thing that get them to stop this non sense is the fan base dwindling…. i haven’t been to a game in two years… this season will be my third… if the FO can’t spend the money to put a team on the field then I can’t spend my money to put my butt in a seat……. screw this…. go nationals!
Angels just signed Josh Hamilton. That does leave Angels with a couple outfielders and all of them are very athletic. Let us see what names shake out and if Cubs are interested.
Rangers might want Soriano for DH in a hitters park and Soriano has played in Texas–come on Greg Maddux down in Texas–talk Nolan into a deal. We gave you Dempster for free so payback time.
Angels really only have one extra OF either Trumbo or Bourjos….I would love either of them but the Mets will probably be in on Bourjos and they have a lot more to offer especially if Dickey isn’t going the way it should. Trumbo would cost even more and I’m afraid we just don’t have the prospects yet to make it worthwhile. The biggest target I could see us going after right now is Olt in Texas…. One year of Garza for Olt is a pretty even swap for both sides since the Rangers want to make a run at a WS again and could use Garza.
Calhoun is ready for Angels and he can play all 3 outfield positions. Organization development just keeps turning out athletic players. When you get a former Angel player, few are one dimensional.

agreed but again we don’t match up well with the Angels… they are going to want a SP and Garza is about all we got to dangle in front of them. Garza is just starting to pitch so a deal now just doesn’t seem possible. Probably best to let Garza pitch up until the deadline to get his value back up where it should be. I like Calhoun outside the fact that he has a smaller frame and I don’t think he will stick as a CF for very long and doesn’t really have to power to be a stud corner OF. He is definitely a solid everyday hitter.
