2/18 Bunting tourney – 1st round
The Cubs bunting tournament began on Monday, and there were a couple upsets as bullpen catcher Andy Lane beat outfielder Dave Sappelt. Nate Halm, the video staffer who won the front office/clubhouse staff portion of the tourney, also advanced, beating pitcher Hector Rondon. Other winners include Luis Valbuena, James Russell, Brian Bogusevic, Edwin Maysonet, Travis Wood and Drew Carpenter.

Bunting tourney again, oh how CUTE. Play ball. If it’s a tourney to help players bunt that is excellent but is it such a topic of discussion? Not for good teams, they just get it done, practice and get ready for the season without this kind of contrived style.
It is a 30 mph lob ball tournament that even our 25 yr old director of baseball operations is competitive. Twenty minutes from Fitch is G.M. Brian Sabean and G.M. Billy Beane of Oakland and there is no bonding events being held–just serious getting ready for winning pennants and spending less money than the cubs. After losing 101 games I thought they would be too embarrassed to repeat this juvenile activity.
It’s actually a good skills competition, and gives Sveum/Cubs management a chance to see how competitive some of these guys are.
