3/14 Italy’s run ends

Anthony Rizzo should rejoin the Cubs soon after Team Italy was eliminated from the World Baseball Classic in a 4-3 loss to Puerto Rico Wednesday night in Miami. Rizzo provided all of Italy’s runs, hitting a three-run double in the fifth. Italy led in its first game against the powerful Dominican Republic, and also against Puerto Rico, but lost both games in the double elimination round.

“We had a lead in every game we played in this tournament,” Rizzo told reporters in Miami. “No one scripted us to be where we are, playing against the best teams. There’s a handful of All-Stars on every team and we had the lead in every game. We all stayed together, and I think the respect that we earned in this tournament is well-deserved for the entire country of Italy.”

Congrats to Italy team. They did well! It will be nice to have our Rizzo back in the lineup on Friday. He should be proud of his contribution to his native Italy and he will probably have many, many wonderful stories to tell his teammates. And many, many memories for his lifetime.
