Alcantara???I have not heard of him. Is he new or am I just spacing out? GREAT GAME last night. Wow – good job coming back Cubbies. I am not liking Scott Feldman’s pitching. Why is he one of our starters? We’ve got to get Garza and Baker back soon!

Arismendy Alcantara is a SS prospect in the low minors. He’s just 21 and played at Daytona last year, so he’s probably a few years away still. He is a switch hitter and hit .302 with 7 homers and 25 steals, so he has potential. However, he ended last season on the DL and is stuck behind Javier Baez (who replaced him at Daytona last season) and of course Starlin Castro on the organizational depth chart. He’s currently listed on the Daytona roster, so who knows if they start him there or bump him up to AA.

As for Feldman, it’s just spring training. Remember last year Travis Wood was awful in the spring, but he turned out to be okay in the 2012 season. Give Feldman a few regular season starts before you write him off completely!

I should also note that his fielding is a work in progress, as I believe he made over 30 errors at short last season and that Junior Lake is also ahead of him on the SS depth chart, so the Cubs will have a few players to get through before they even think about calling up Alcantara. Probably 2016 at the earliest, if at all.

Do we know yet to which classification Baez will be assigned? White, according to the latest edition of USA Today Sports weekly, Scott Baker suffered a setback from Tommy John surgery, and will be out until at least the All star break.

Thank you for the great info Doug. Hope he does well today. He made 30 errors last season, Castro made 27. I guess they both need to work on their defense this year. I’ll try to stick with Feldman until he proves me wrong. Deal?
