4/19 Cubs 6, Rangers 2

Notes from Thursday’s Cubs win over the Rangers:

* Starlin Castro extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a sixth-inning double, the 100th double of his career. He has eight hitting streaks of 10 or more games since the start of 2011, tied with the Yankees’ Robinson Cano for the most in the Majors in that span (thanks to STATS, Inc.). Castro also drew two walks Thursday, his first of the season.

* Anthony Rizzo’s third-inning, two-run homer traveled an estimated 475 feet, the longest home run hit in the Majors this season (courtesy of ESPN Stats & Info.).

* Welington Castillo had a career-high four hits, and has hit safely in nine of his first 11 games.

* Alfonso Soriano hit his first home run of the season in the third inning.

* Carlos Villanueva picked up his first win with the Cubs, throwing seven innings of four-hit ball. He is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA (3 ER/21.0 IP) in three starts, the first pitcher to start his Cubs career with three-straight quality starts since Carlos Silva began the 2010 campaign with four-straight quality efforts.

* Cubs starting pitchers have a 3.15 ERA with eight quality starts in the first 14 games.

* David DeJesus is batting .455 in his last six games.

* Nate Schierholtz extended his hitting streak to seven games with a second-inning double.

* Luis Valbuena recorded his second multi-hit game of the season and has hit safely in six of his last nine games.

* James Russell has posted eight consecutive scoreless outings to open the season (5 1/3 IP).

* Carlos Marmol has thrown five consecutive scoreless outings, dating to April 8 vs. Milwaukee.

You guys rock!! What a great game yesterday. You ALL played superbly and I hope you took that mantra with you to Atlanta. Can’t wait for tonight’s game.

I mean Milwaukee. Silly me.

atlanta? you mean Milwaukee?

it can’t be said enough that the SP has been great so far…. very nice to see…. production is an atrocity and the bullpen is in disarray

and before you know who steps in the production isn’t because of one person… its because of about 3-4 subpar players in this lineup that should not be there (on a winning team)….CF, 3B, and 2B have been almost the worst at their positions thus far…. granted Barney is back and should bump production up a LITTLE (not the way some of you think he will)…..

3rd base has been just fine in my opinion. Hitting lower in the line up, Valbuena has produced a .364 OBP.
CF has produced a .354 OBP from DeJesus.
2B has been a problem, but hopefully thats cured with Barney’s return.

i think you better look at our 3B production compared to the league… runs=LAST…hits= second to LAST… slg%=27…OPS= 26………. thats NOT just fine… you can’t look at just one player you got to look at the total from that position.

Go cubs go! I can’t believe I missed the game!

Pet,
You are just lucky that Isabel has not jumped on you. So far you have been labeled a fruitcake and the southern end of a horse going north. I don’t think she would be as easy on you. She is a lady; but even ladies can be pushed too far. You are just a legend in your own mind. Deal with it!

I believe that Isabel would never lower herself to such a level. Hopefully all the insulting comments just roll off her back and she has enough common sense, fortitude etc to just enjoy
the fact that we civil commenters get under the skin of TOWSRN and have a good laugh
at his immaturity. Works for me…for some time now… Oh yeah, and Barney is pretty good
ballplayer NO DOUBT.

There definitely shouldn’t be anyone that doesn’t think Barney is a quality major league starter at this point. Certainly not an all-star, but not many are really that good anyway. I don’t think he’s reached his ceiling at the plate yet either. This is an important season for him to develop at the plate. One of the many things I’m going to enjoy watching this year.

aw joey you need a tissue cause your feelings get hurt when you have unneeded rants? AWWW so sorry… maybe the class here can coddle you

i think i will be just fine…

The issue of production is across the board. The last time we had a decent team we were getting production from Soto, Edmonds and DeRosa at 7-8. Even Fontenot was outhitting/outscoring Valbuena and the myriad of losers currently populating 3rd base and 2nd base prior to Barney returning.

For me and despite his team leading RBIs, Rizzo has been as much of a disappointment as Soriano.

We know that Soriano will warm up with the weather and he has raised his average the la few days, but Rizzo has been hit and lots of miss. Given the way Rizzo has been touted as the third coming, he has been comprehensively outplayed by both Foreman (ATL) and Goldschmidt (AZ). And Rizzo’s defence has certainly not been up to the prescribed standards.

Yes Soriano has started slow, but he will be in the top 5 LFs come the end of the season if still in Chicago.

Personally I think we are going the right way and with Stewart back soon we will have a first choice 1-6 which will at least be competitive and play close to 0.500 if we can get rid of Greggles and move Feldman to the pen.

My worry is the lack of pop from Hairston and Sappelt – certainly I would have released Sappelt befor DFAing Gonzalez who is at least a good defensive infield back-up.

o ya I agree production has been bad across the board but especially bad at 3B, 2B, and CF/leadoff…. don’t look now but Soriano is hitting 300… wow never thought I would see the day… if he ends up at .270 by the AS break look for him to be a NICE NICE trade piece.
