5/31 Cubs lineup

Matt Garza makes his third start since coming off the disabled list on Friday when the Cubs open a three-game series against the Diamondbacks. Lefty Wade Miley starts for Arizona. Here’s the lineup:

DeJesus CF
Castro SS
Rizzo 1B
Soriano LF
Hairston RF
Castillo C
Ransom 3B
Barney 2B
Garza P

* Garza needs to drive in one run to tie the Major League record for most RBIs by pitchers in a calendar month. The 1940 Tigers totaled 20 RBIs in August. The Cubs pitchers set the National League record on Thursday, thanks to Travis Wood’s grand slam. The Cubs pitchers have 19 RBIs in May.

* Catcher Welington Castillo appears to be fine after taking a bat on the knuckles of his left hand in Thursday’s game. The back swing caught his hand, and he was called for catcher’s interference.

* Garza has surrendered three or fewer earned runs in 18-consecutive home starts dating to June 27, 2011. That’s the longest stretch by a Cub since Kerry Wood allowed three or fewer earned runs in 22-straight home starts from July 7, 2000-April 20, 2002. In his last 18 starts at Wrigley Field since June 27, 2011, Garza is 7-4 with two complete games and a 1.97 ERA.

* Cubs pitchers not only have the most RBIs, they lead all Major League staffs with six doubles and four home runs. The homers have come in the last 13 games dating to May 15.

Good morning Cub’s world! Will Garza get a home run today? Just sayin’ he has a lot to live up to now. No more non-hitting pitchers allowed!

Our pitchers need to instruct most of the position players on how to approach hitting. Is a pity we are part of the best division in baseball. The third place team, Cincinnati, has a record which would place them in the lead in every other division save the American League West. I hope we do not need to employ our closer today vs. the Snakes, as I don`t see how he will be available after yesterday`s brain cramp by Sveum.

Castro needs a day off. Was hoping it would be today, but is too late for that. Last time I suggested a player sit, it was Rizzo, and he had a banner day at the dish. Could lightening strike twice?

I observed that Arizona is not in the NCAA baseball field of 64. Isn`t that highly unusual? Are they not a traditional power and have they not won that thing in past? This seems off the charts just as Bryant`s 31 homers are off the charts. Am thinking mamma can help me with this one.

Soriano two run bomb!!! Woo Hoo!! A very positive START (finally) to HIS season….
Come on hot weather our clean up hitter needs you!!!

Wow! 5 in a row! Garza playing with the big boys, shutting down AZ. Impressive…and…POSITIVE TOO!! I can see Garza and Samardijza being considered for 3 year deals to go along with Wood and maybe Feldman. Wouldn’t this give us a window of opportunity to go along with Soler, Almora, our 2013 draft pick and a few free agents? I think we can compete within two years. If they deal Garza AND Feldman wouldn’t that just put us back two steps in the rotation? Either way it IS the pitching that is key this season because honestly we are getting some surprise hitting production from the starting pitchers and Navarro so we can’t count on this offense to be sustained. But if we can sustain quality starters to hang around long enough for the minor league guys to show up…who knows?

going for six in a row with the shark on the mound and im gonna miss it!! not available here at all!
NOT FAIR!!!!!

Why is FOX allowed to do this? I hate it! Boycott them! Bahbahbah. It promises to be a great game too with Samardj pitching.

Gosh Mamma…that’s awful. Bad break indeed! Guess we can’t count Hairston out just yet, maybe HE needs warm weather too!? Maybe he’ll get more playing time after the trade deadline….;) ;)

There are many advantages to listening to games on radio, mamma. You can paint your own visuals as you listen to the description of games if done competently by the individual broadcasters. I love listening to Vin Scully, for example. From what you wrote here, I`m thinking you do not regret bypassing today`s tv coverage, even though it was not voluntary.
