6/19 Cubs sign Masek
The Cubs announced they have signed their fifth-round Draft, right-handed pitcher Trey Masek. The Cubs have now signed nine players from this year’s draft, including three top 10 selections. Masek, 21, was an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention and a Gregg Olson Breakout Player of the Year Semifinalist with Texas Tech this season, his junior year. He went 5-2 with a 1.82 ERA, three complete games and one shutout in 11 starts. The Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection struck out a team-high 69 hitters and walked 22 while not allowing a home run in 79 innings of work. The right-hander held the opposition to a .206 batting average.
Masek is one of five Red Raiders since 1991 to lead the team in wins, ERA, complete games, innings pitched and strikeouts. He is just the second Texas Tech player in the last 14 years to be named to the Golden Spikes Award list. A native of Austin, Texas, Masek was named the Louisville Slugger Texas High School Player of the Year as a senior at Giddings High School.
