7/3 Cubs get Jimenez
The Cubs have reportedly snagged the top prize in the international class of prospects, 16-year-old Dominican outfielder Eloy Jimenez. MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez reported Wednesday that Jimenez had agreed to a $2.8 million deal with the Cubs. The teen apparently turned down more money from another team to sign with the Cubs. At 6-4, 198 pounds, Jimenez is an advanced hitter with quick hands and projects as a corner outfielder because of his arm strength and ability.
The Cubs have been active, signing 16-year-old shortstop Gleyber Torres ($1.7 million), considered the best player out of Venezuela in this year’s class and ranked third among all international prospects by MLB.com. The Cubs also have reportedly signed right-handed pitcher Erling Moreno of Colombia ($800,000).
On Wednesday, the Cubs added catcher Johan Matos for $270,000.
The Cubs would not confirm the signings. Players must pass physicals before the deals can be finalized.
